Walls and ceilings are transformed through the artistic use of paint and texture. Trompe'loeil painting techniques (French, meaning "to fool the eye") produce the illusion of three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface,  mimicking the most intricate plaster mouldings and decorative ornament.

Replication of the look of natural materials — such as wood, marble and stone — are achieved using layers of paint and glazes.
